What is a bunk cooler?

A bunk cooler is an air conditioner that cools the sleeper of a truck while the engine is off, so a driver can rest without idling.

It is the same thing as sleeper cab air conditioning. Drivers tend to say bunk cooler, and that is what Coolabah has been building in Australia for 35 years.

The Alternative

Sleeping next to a diesel unit is unpleasant

Idling burns fuel, racks up engine hours and is generating exhaust and noise. A diesel bunk cooler is quieter than idling, but it still burns fuel every night, still needs servicing, and still puts exhaust near where you sleep.

What is a bunk cooler and how is it different to truck air conditioning?

A bunk cooler cools the sleeper compartment rather than the whole cab, and runs with the engine off so the driver can sleep without idling. All Coolabah units are bunk coolers. The difference between them is where they mount and how much cooling they deliver.

How long does it run overnight?

Eight hours minimum on a single battery, and 8 to 10 hours in most applications. Run time depends on the setup, the battery bank and how hot it is.

Does it heat as well as cool?

The Joey and Koala give 500 W of heating and the Kookaburra 750 W. The Possum is cooling only. Where heating is fitted there is no need for a separate diesel heater.

Will it flatten my truck batteries?

No. The system runs off its own auxiliary battery and recharges while you drive. The Backcharger feature can also "jump-start" the truck if the starting batteries go flat.
